RAF Davidstow Moor: WW2 Bomb Stores loading platform (12)
Where live bombs were offloaded from lorries transporting them from the stores to the bomb preparation area. Note the earth bund for blast containment in the event of an accidental explosion. Tramelling rings set into the wall of the platform would assist the offloading where ropes threaded through the rings would be looped around the bombs to facilitate them being loaded onto the platform. Next, fins would be attached, and bombs fused preparatory to loading onto tractor towed bomb trains. Bombs were carried on special low loader trolleys that could be coupled together to form a train that would then be taken to the aircraft waiting to be 'bombed up'.
