On 17 November 1942 he reported on an incident the previous day in which four Jews who had managed to escape from the General Government—three men and one woman—were arrested by two gendarmes in the Losien area of the Będzin Landkreis.
On being interrogated, they sought to escape; one of the gendarmes, Paul Grytz, shot dead the elder man, by the name of Kupferberg, while the other gendarme, Krebs, shot dead Kupferberg's son. Mentgen added that the gendarmerie was continuing its pursuit of the other two Jews.

Nie mam wątpliwości co do tego, iż ów Grytz i Grötz to ta sama osoba, tylko te spolszczonym "umlautem".
